Inje University Paik Hospital began its journey in 1936 when Dr. Paik In-je, a pioneer of modern medicine in Korea and a patriot, then serving as the head professor of surgery at Kyungsung Medical College, acquired Uemura Surgical Clinic located at the present site of Seoul Paik Hospital. Initially managed on a consignment basis, the hospital came under direct management in 1941. Embracing his founding philosophy of “Saving the world with medical expertise and humanity.” (In-sul Je-se, 仁術濟世) and inheriting the spiritual legacy of Honesty, Integrity, and Diligence he left behind, Seoul Paik Hospital was established in 1941, followed by Busan Paik Hospital in 1979, Sanggye Paik Hospital in 1989, Ilsan Paik Hospital in 1999, and Haeundae Paik Hospital in 2010. Today, it stands as one of Korea’s foremost university hospitals, operating four hospitals with over 2,900 beds.

On December 17, 1946, Dr. Paik In-je established the Paik Hospital Foundation, Korea’s first private public-interest legal entity. This pioneering act is comparable to the precedents set in the United States by Carnegie, Ford, and Rockefeller, who established foundations to return personal wealth to society, thereby laying the groundwork for the healthy development of capitalism. Later, in honor of Dr. Paik’s noble aspirations, his eldest son, Dr. Paik Nak-jo, established the Inje Educational Foundation in 1979 through tireless efforts, which has since evolved into today’s Inje University and Paik Medical Center with its four affiliated hospitals.

The rapid changes in population and industrial structures due to low birth rates and an aging society, coupled with the Fourth Industrial Revolution, demand innovative medical services that transcend traditional treatments. In response, Inje University Paik Hospital has equipped itself with state-of-the-art diagnostic and treatment equipment and facilities, and its top-tier medical professionals deliver the highest level of care. Building upon the next-generation integrated medical information system—set to be fully established across all affiliated hospitals by March 2025—the hospital is poised to evolve into a smart hospital that implements cutting-edge digital healthcare, thereby leading the future of medicine. Furthermore, by flawlessly completing the construction of the Severe Disease Specialty Center at Haeundae Paik Hospital, scheduled to open in 2033, it will establish a comprehensive emergency medical system in the Busan area, elevating the safety and quality of healthcare in the community.
