What is a Snoring Clinic?


Snoring can be caused by a bad nose, but it can also be caused by a narrow throat due to enlarged tonsils, or a large tongue. At first glance, it doesn't seem to be a problem, but while you sleep, your muscles relax and your breathing narrows, which can lead to snoring.


Sleep apnea refers to a case where severe snoring is accompanied by symptoms of suffocation. A pause in breathing for more than 10 seconds is called apnea, and if apnea occurs more than 5 times an hour, it is considered pathological.


Polysomnography is performed to check sleep quality and sleep apnea patterns. Endoscopy, radiography, and MRI may be performed during sleep to determine which part of the patient's breathing is blocked.


Treatment methods largely include non-surgical methods and surgical methods. Since most people are obese, it is necessary to control their weight, and sleeping on their side is also helpful. It is effective to use an intraoral device (MAD) or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). Surgical treatment methods vary depending on the area causing snoring: surgery to widen the narrow area in the nose (correction for deviated nasal septum and thickening of the inferior turbinate), surgery to remove the tonsils and mucous membrane of the pharynx (velopharyngoplasty). etc.


What causes snoring?


● Stretched tongue and throat muscles

This phenomenon occurs when the patient's muscle strength is excessively relaxed due to alcohol or sleeping pills. In some cases, it also occurs during deep sleep.


● Huge tonsil tissue

Large tonsils and adenoids often cause snoring in young children, and obese people may develop snoring due to a narrowed throat.


● Excessively long uvula

The long uvula acts as a valve that disrupts the flow of air, causing it to waver and vibrate during breathing.


● Nasal congestion

If your nose is clogged, it is difficult to inhale air, and a vacuum is created in areas with low air flow, causing the loose tissues in the neck to stretch.
