Lung Cancer Center

Clinic opening

The Lung Cancer Center was established to provide the most optimal treatment to each lung cancer patient and to achieve a high cure rate and improve quality of life. In order to provide patient-centered, customized treatment that takes into account each patient's individual characteristics, doctors from the departments of pulmonology, thoracic surgery, medical oncology, radiation oncology, radiology, and pathology come together to discuss and decide on the direction of treatment together with the patient. Thoracic surgery provides a variety of surgical methods most appropriate for the patient's condition, including minimally invasive surgery using video thoracoscopy, organ-preserving surgical treatment, and wide resection. An oncologist who specializes in lung cancer is in charge of anticancer treatment, and customized radiation treatment is provided to patients using state-of-the-art radiation therapy equipment.

Lung Cancer Information

Lung cancer is cancer that occurs in the lungs. It is a disease in which cancer cells caused by genetic mutations grow, destroy surrounding tissues and organs, and proliferate. Lung cancer may invade nearby organs and metastasize to other parts of the body. About 90% of lung cancers occur in smokers, and the incidence increases with the duration and amount of smoking. According to cancer registration data from the Ministry of Health and Welfare in 2009, lung cancer ranks third in men and fourth in women. According to the 2010 mortality statistics, lung cancer deaths were reported to be the highest at 25.3% of all cancer deaths. As such, lung cancer has a higher mortality rate and poor prognosis compared to other cancers. However, lung cancer detected early shows good treatment results, with a 5-year survival rate approaching 80%. Therefore, active early cancer screening can lead to a good prognosis.

Lung Cancer Early Diagnosis Clinic: One-Stop Service

Lung cancer discovered after symptoms have already developed is already advanced and surgery is only possible in 20% of cases. Therefore, early diagnosis is most important to increase the cure rate and survival rate of lung cancer. A recently published study of 50,000 people in the United States found that performing a CT scan once a year reduced mortality by 25%. Ilsan Paik Hospital provides a one-stop service of same-day CT and result confirmation.
