Clinic opening

Inje University Ilsan Paik Hospital Stroke Center was established in November 2010 to provide acute stroke treatment more quickly and systematically, reduce death and disability due to stroke, and improve the quality of life of stroke patients.

What is a stroke?

Stroke is a disease in which cerebral blood vessels are blocked by blood clots (cerebral infarction) or rupture (cerebral hemorrhage), causing brain damage, resulting in death or serious disability.

The suffering and economic burden caused by stroke to patients, their families, and society is very serious. Worldwide, one in six people will experience a stroke during their lifetime, one person has a stroke every two seconds, and one person dies from a stroke every six seconds.

In Korea, stroke ranks first in mortality as a single organ disease. More than 100,000 strokes occur every year, resulting in the loss of 340,000 years of healthy life, and the total number of stroke patients is approximately 450,000.

Stroke is preventable. Up to 80% can be prevented by controlling high blood pressure, smoking, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, heart disease, obesity, and excessive drinking.

Stroke is a disease that can be treated effectively. If a stroke occurs, prompt and systematic emergency treatment can reverse or minimize the disability caused by the stroke. (Time is Brain.)

Thrombolysis is a treatment that unclogs blood vessels blocked by blood clots and is the most effective treatment for cerebral infarction. However, thrombolytic treatment must be started within 4.5 or 6 hours of symptom onset.

In the case of cerebral hemorrhage, surgical treatment is required if there is a large amount of bleeding or if there is a cerebrovascular aneurysm that can cause rebleeding.

Through systematic treatment in the stroke intensive care unit and neurological intensive care unit by a stroke medical team, including stroke specialists and professional nurses, stroke progression, recurrence, and complications can be minimized, and death and disability can be significantly reduced.

Disability caused by stroke can be significantly improved through a systematic stroke rehabilitation program.
