※ Novalis radiosurgery is a stereotactic radiosurgery method that selectively and precisely removes only the tumor by creating a beam according to the shape of the lesion for localized targeted treatment of the tumor. It is a bloodless radiosurgery method that destroys the tumor in the same way as surgical incision without damaging the important tissues surrounding the tumor cells.

Ilsan Paik Hospital's radiosurgery is a bloodless surgical method that does not require skin incisions or general anesthesia as in traditional surgical procedures. It is also performed precisely on tumors located in important nerve tissues that are very vulnerable to surgical procedures or radiation, such as the vertebrae, optic nerves, and spinal nerves. It is an ultra-precision radiosurgery method that treats only the lesion.

☆ Differentiation:

This is a treatment that solves the limitation that other existing radiosurgery methods can only be applied to diseases limited to the brain. Even when adjacent to important nerve tissues that are highly vulnerable to radiation, such as the vertebral column, optic nerve, and spinal nerve, only the lesion is treated with radiosurgery. .

★ Indications:

Although conventional radiosurgery had limitations in application depending on the shape, location, or size of the tumor, Novalis radiosurgery applies stereotactic radiosurgical treatment to intractable brain tumors or spinal cord tumors that are impossible or difficult to operate, regardless of the location and shape of the tumor. This is possible. In particular, it is an effective surgical treatment that shows a high local cure rate by minimizing the risk of complications even in large-volume tumors or tumors located in critical areas such as the respiratory tract/optic nerve/spinal cord by solving limitations in location or size by using hypofractionated irradiation.

Ilsan Paik Hospital Radiosurgery Center is a specialized brain stereotactic and spinal stereotactic radiosurgery center in the field of neurosurgery recognized at home and abroad. The medical staff at this center is comprised of excellent faculty with extensive clinical knowledge and treatment experience in gamma knife radiosurgery since the early 1990s.

Based on this, we are leading the way in contributing to the development of radiosurgery at home and abroad. Using linear accelerators exclusively for radiosurgery, which have made remarkable progress since the early 2000s, we have been performing ultra-precision radiosurgery for a variety of neurological diseases, ranging from intractable brain tumors to spinal tumors, cerebrovascular diseases (arteriovenous malformations, etc.), and functional diseases (trigeminal neuralgia). It is being carried out successfully.

***Key History***

▶Since November 2000, the ExacTrac radiosurgery method using intensity-controlled radiosurgery and position tracking navigation has been introduced into Korea and this bloodless surgical method has been continuously developed.

▶In 2008, abundant clinical results of more than 1,000 cases of intractable nervous system brain tumors, spinal tumors, and cerebrovascular diseases were presented at an international academic conference held at our hospital, and the long-accumulated patient treatment experience and knowledge were shared with renowned scholars at home and abroad. A venue for exchange was provided.

▶Since 2012, treatment plans using iPLAN and hybrid Arc treatment methods have been introduced for the first time in Korea, making the center's high level of medical excellence widely known.

▶ Thus, to this day, it has contributed to the development of nervous system radiosurgery in related medical fields at home and abroad. In addition, we not only share the center's rich clinical experience through writing and academic activities, but have recently presented standard treatment guidelines for radiosurgery through multi-institutional joint research with famous overseas university hospitals and medical centers.
