Department of GI Stomach Cancer

Gastric cancer is the most common cancer in Korea, accounting for 24.0of all cancer in men and the second most common for women at 15.3% (2002 Korean Central Cancer Registry report). Gastric cancer in Gumi has been remarkably reduced, but nationwide it is still very high. Gastric cancer is fatal in 31.7 men and 17.2 women out of 100,000, relatively high compared to other organ cancers. It has the highest occurrence ratio and second highest fatality ratio.

Fortunately, as more and more gastric cancer cases are diagnosed in early stages and surgery is improving with the development of new methods (minimal invasive surgery, laparoscopic surgery, robotic surgery) and antibiotics, the fatality ratio has decreased. This department aims to improve patient satisfaction and maximize treatment effectiveness by providing patient-oriented systematic, professional ‘one-stop’ medical services based on the accumulated clinical experience and research of the Korean Gastric Cancer Center. The center commemorates Dr. Kim Jinbok of Seoul Paik Hospital and provides optimal treatment tailored to each patient, factoring in disease progress and the biological features of the cancer based on multidirectional treatment policies, adequate space, and rapid and efficient cooperative treatment.

The Haeundae Paik Hospital medical team performs quality gastric cancer surgery and treatment under the leadership of Professor Seo Byeongjo, former Seoul Paik Hospital Kim Jinbok Gastric Cancer Center head, and Professor Oh Seongjin, formerly of Yonsei University Shinchon Severance Hospital.
